Alert channel

Google Chat uptime alerts

If your team works in Google Workspace, alerts belong in the Google Chat space where the people who fix things already talk.

Create the webhook in Google Chat

  1. Open the space that should receive alerts.
  2. Open the space menu, then Apps & integrations, then Webhooks.
  3. Choose Add webhook, give it a name such as Upcertain and, if you like, an avatar URL.
  4. Copy the URL. It starts with https://chat.googleapis.com/v1/spaces/ and carries a key and token.

Incoming webhooks are available in Google Workspace accounts; your administrator may need to allow them. Personal Google accounts cannot create them.

Add it in Upcertain

  1. In Upcertain, open Settings, Alert channels and choose Google Chat. Owners, admins and editors can add channels.
  2. Paste the webhook URL.
  3. Pick the events to send: Down, Up (recovery) and SSL certificate expiry.
  4. Tick Pre-select on new monitors if this should be the default for monitors you create from now on. Existing monitors keep their own choice.
  5. Save, then use Send a test in the channel list to post a test message.
  6. Open each monitor that should alert here and add the channel under its alert settings, with an optional delay and repeat interval.

What arrives in the space

  • Down: the monitor's name and address, the cause (for example HTTP 503, a timeout or a missing keyword), when it started, and buttons to acknowledge or view the incident.
  • Still down: a reminder with the time so far, if you set a repeat interval on the monitor's channel (every 5 to 1440 minutes). Acknowledging the incident stops reminders.
  • Up: the recovery with the cause and the total downtime, in the same channel.
  • SSL certificate expiry: a warning on the days you chose before a certificate expires.
  • Grouped alert: if alert grouping is on and several monitors fail within a few minutes, one message lists them all instead of one message each.

Each message is formatted text: the title in bold, the summary, the key fields and links that open the incident in Upcertain. Acknowledging happens in Upcertain itself, by a signed-in owner, admin or editor, and stops reminders on every channel.

Spaces and routing

A webhook posts into one space. Create one webhook per space and one Upcertain channel per webhook, then let each monitor choose its channels. A typical split is an operations space for outages and an infrastructure space for SSL warnings.

If messages stop arriving

  • A deleted webhook or a removed space makes Google reject the message. The delivery is retried at 30 seconds, 1, 2 and 4 minutes before it is marked failed.
  • Use Send a test in Settings, Alert channels to check the URL after any change in Google Chat.
  • Keep an email channel on important monitors as well, so an outage is never only in one place.

Questions

Can Upcertain post into a thread?
No. Each alert and its recovery are separate messages in the space.
Does it need a Google Cloud project or a Chat app?
No. A space webhook is enough; Upcertain sends JSON to that URL.
