Where Dead Man's Snitch does more

Its larger plan adds smart alerts and error notices, and every plan has an API and the Field Agent for reporting in. It has been dedicated to cron monitoring for years.

Where Upcertain is different

  • Heartbeats and uptime in one place. Upcertain watches cron jobs with heartbeat monitors and also checks websites, APIs, ports and certificates, with the same alert channels and incidents for both.
  • Status pages that show jobs and websites side by side, on your own domain on Team and Business.
  • Periods from 30 seconds to 30 days with a grace period of up to a day.
  • MCP and REST so agents and scripts can read missed heartbeats like any other incident.

How the pattern works in Upcertain

A heartbeat monitor expects a call to its unique URL within each period plus a grace time. The dead man's switch guide explains how to choose both.

Moving from Dead Man's Snitch

  1. List what you monitor in Dead Man's Snitch: URLs, hosts or jobs, with their intervals.
  2. Import URLs and hosts with a CSV file, up to 200 rows at a time (CSV import); add heartbeat monitors one by one.
  3. Add alert channels and send a test to each.
  4. Point your status page subdomain at pages.upcertain.com if you had one (custom domains).
  5. Run both side by side for a week before switching the old checks off.

Questions

Does Upcertain have an equivalent of Field Agent?
No separate agent is needed: any job can report in by calling its heartbeat URL with curl, wget or an HTTP client.
Can a heartbeat fail on an error rather than a missed run?
Report in only when the job succeeds, so an error stops the heartbeat. A job that fails early then shows up as a missed heartbeat at the deadline.
Is there a free plan?
Upcertain is in early access: billing is not enabled, accounts start on the Basic plan and plans are assigned from the account.
